Shocking! Famed fashion house Schiaparelli revived

PARIS (AP) ? Shoe hats, lobster dresses, and spiraling goggle glasses could easily be part of a closet inventory belonging to Lady Gaga.

But these objects were all spawned from the mind of another woman, who was born ? incredibly ? in 1890: the avant-garde Elsa Schiaparelli.

The house of the influential fashion designer, and hated rival of Coco Chanel, is being revived this fall, in one of the most highly anticipated fashion events of 2012 in Paris. There's been a flurry of activity this year, including actress Farida Khelfa being named as house ambassador.

If Schiaparelli is no longer a household name ? her business folded in 1954, and she died in 1973 ? her design firsts have certainly lived on: newspaper prints, exposed zippers, perfume bottles in the female form, shocking pink, and ? arguably ? the first woman's power suit.

"The house Schiaparelli is really the DNA of fashion," says Khelfa. "When you see the world of fashion across the century, you can see all the people she has inspired ?all the great couturiers of the last century and this one."

The new house will, of course, inherit all the iconic house codes, but ? lacking an artistic director and any clothes dating past 1954 ? it surely must be one of the most curious fashion relaunches in recent times.

But why strike now?

"It feels like the right moment... and things are moving quickly," said Khelfa who added they've finally found a key piece of the puzzle in reacquiring the original showroom on the 21 Place Vendome, which will set the tone for the clothes production, expected next summer.

"It's really something to be in the very place of creation. We can imagine the boutique downstairs, with all the window displays made by (artist Salvador) Dali. ... In her day, there were three great women at Place Vendome: Schiaparelli, Madame Chanel and Madame Gres. Now we're back."

Inside the revamped showroom, Schiaparelli bigwigs have painstakingly recreated her surrealist universe. Original artifacts that artists designed for the Schiaparelli boutique are proudly on display. Across five salons, glittering gold columns by Alberto Giacometti, a powder compact in the shape of a telephone dial by Dali, a wacky colored carpet by Fernand Leger, spiraling metal glasses created by Man Ray.

Also featured is a "cabinet of curiosity" which featured the perfume Shocking ? a reminder of why the Schiaparelli name became world renowned. A one-foot (30-centimeter) curved fuchsia perfume bottle stands provocatively in the shape of the bust of Hollywood sex symbol Mae West ? a design echoed by designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier. "Shocking" was an adjective on high rotation in the Schiaparelli vocabulary. She invented a bright fuchsia hue ? the now world famous "shocking pink" ? that she chose as the house's signature color.

In 1948, according to company lore, a survey of Americans put Elsa Schiaparelli at the top of their list of most famous French people. But they still couldn't pronounce her name: the "Sch" is hard, as in "school."

A much-publicized exhibit at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in May, featuring Schiaparelli's dresses alongside modern Prada ones, introduced her melodic name to whole a new generation, but showed how avant-garde her designs remain.

People "had trouble seeing which was the dress from 1927 and which was from 2012," says Khelfa. "Often the 1927 ones looked more current! That's true avant-garde."

Paris-based fashion writer Rebecca Voight sees the launch as hugely promising. "She still has such an incredibly vibrant image and what a name. The people behind the launch are really in the know, so there's really no reason they'll get it wrong. The question is who will (the designer) be?"

The identity of the artistic director remains the biggest question mark.

The pressure for the launch to succeed may perhaps explain why there's still been no formal announcement, although it was scheduled for September.

Khelfa and Schiaparelli CEO Camilla Schiavone dismissed rumors that John Galliano might be in the running, but they both refused to reveal a short-list.

Schiavone tried to explain away the secrecy.

"The house was rebought in 2006. Now, we have the property. We've waited so long to get it right. We're not interested in running after someone. But you will know in the next three weeks or so. The first, what I call, ready-to-couture collection will probably be June 2013."

Ready-to-couture is a concept Schiavone hopes will keep the classy profile of the Schiaparelli name. Garments won't be available in boutiques but will be made-to-measure for select clients who are invited to the 21 Place Vendome for fittings. Though the house says the aim is to produce highly wearable clothes, the first collection will be shown during the Paris Haute Couture week ? fittingly, alongside historic rival Chanel.

In their heyday, Coco Chanel dismissed Schiaparelli as "that Italian artist who makes clothes." Schiaparelli responded, equally cattily, calling Chanel "that milliner."

Fashion rivalries are in vogue at the moment. A highlight of this year's fashion calendar involves the media pitting the two new designers at Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior against each other.

So after 60 years does the Schiaparelli revival signal there'll once again be handbags at dawn on the Place Vendome?

"No! Chanel is Chanel. It remains Chanel," says Khelfa. She hesitates: "But Schiaparelli is coming!"

There will be no cease-fire in Syria

At least not one that matters.

Mr. Brahimi wants the cease-fire for three days around Eid al-Adha, the Muslim holiday that celebrates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son at God's command. Iran and Turkey, which support the regime of Bashar al-Assad and the rebellion, respectively, are on board. Will there be a cease-fire? The smart money should bet against it. There have been promised cease-fires before that have been completely ignored. There's no particular reason to think this would be any different.

And while country's like Iran and Turkey (and the US, and Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, each in their own fashion) are backing factions in the Syrian civil war, that doesn't give them much, if any, control over their behavior. It is often foolishly imagined that a paid rebel or government is a bought rebel or government. They maintain their own interests.

But perhaps there will be a brief pause in Syria's brutal war. What then? Brahimi is apparently telling reporters that he hopes a temporary cease-fire around the holiday, which starts on Oct. 24, will form the basis for a negotiated settlement to the war.

If he really believes that he will be sorely disappointed. There are simply no grounds for a negotiated settlement at this point. The rebels will not accept the survival of Assad's Alawite dominated Baathist regime, nor will the foreign sponsors in the Gulf of the increasingly well-armed Sunni Islamist component of the rebellion. Perhaps Brahimi is hoping that Assad and the regime hard core will use the cease-fire to negotiate their own arrests and seizure of their assets? Or perhaps the rebels, after so much bloodshed and threats from the government to lay wasted to their whole families, will decide that the current dictatorship really isn't so bad and pack it in?

Of course not.

Brahimi does not have an enviable job. UN envoys, by long tradition, are required to promise against all evidence to the contrary that a cease-fire or negotiated settlement is close at hand, even when it remains as far away as ever.

The Syrian civil war will resolve itself some day. But at the moment, the chances that would be on mutually acceptable terms to the rebellion and regime are highly unlikely.

CSN: Top catcher? Bengie picks Yadier over Buster

ST. LOUIS ? Catchers are getting a lot of attention in this NLCS, and for good reason. Buster Posey and Yadier Molina are team leaders, All-Star backstops and are likely to appear at or near the top of most National League MVP ballots.

It?s an even more intriguing matchup when one of them is your former prot?g? and the other is your kid brother.

?I tell you, this is a privilege for me,? said Bengie Molina, Yadier?s oldest brother and Posey?s forerunner behind the plate for the Giants. ?And not just for me. This is a privilege for anyone who enjoys the game of baseball. It?s a joy to watch these two kids compete.

?These are two catchers who can play the position and call a great game. But it?s not just that. They can hit, too. They can do everything. That right there is the beauty of baseball.?

It?s a beauty that Bengie Molina appreciated early on. The day the Cardinals drafted Yadier in the fourth round, Bengie predicted that his brother would become a superstar and the best, most accomplished of the three catching Molina brothers. In 2009, just a week into Posey?s first big league spring training camp, Molina understood that this clean-cut, bright-eyed kid from Florida State would take his job very, very soon.

It came quicker than anyone anticipated; the Giants shipped out Bengie a month ahead of the trade deadline in 2010 to the Texas Rangers. Then Posey?s Giants tore through Bengie?s Rangers in the World Series.

Yet Bengie never spoke a jealous or resentful word about Posey, whom he still considers a friend.

He has to be honest, though, when asked where his loyalties lie between the two catchers in this series.

?Everybody knows what I think of Posey,? Bengie told me by phone. ?He?s a great, great catcher, he calls a great game and I knew this kid would be a superstar the first time I saw him. But I don?t think he?s up to the defensive skills of my brother yet. My brother is in another league, and plus this year he really hit when the team needed him to hit.

?Posey can get there. I?m not putting him down at all. He has all the talent and he will work hard, I know that. But nobody is in a league with my brother.?

The Molina brothers will gather in Puerto Rico next month when their mother, Gladys, turns 65. They would like nothing better than to celebrate another World Series champion, too.

If the Cardinals go all the way, it would be Yadier?s third World Series ring and the seventh among all three Molina brothers. (Jose won in 2002 as Bengie?s backup with the Angels, and also in 2009 with the Yankees. And the Giants mailed a ring to Bengie for his contributions in the first half of 2010.)

Bengie left no doubt: That?s what he hopes will happen.

?Hey, against the Reds, I was all Giants, man ? all Giants,? Bengie said, with a chuckle. ?Against the Cards, I?m all Cards. I love the Giants, I love the city and I love the fans, man, they have something special there. But I?ve got to root for my brother, 100 percent, they?ve got to understand that.?

Bengie cannot help but pull for Posey, though, and not just because he respects him as a player and a person. Like many others, he was floored at Posey?s determined recovery from the devastating ankle injury that ended his season in May of last year.

?Very impressed, very impressed,? he said. ?It tells you -- it shows you -- what kind of a player and a person he is. It shows you his demeanor and dedication and his motivation to come back from that devastating injury, and not come back to play first base, but to catch. He?ll be the MVP of the league.

What he did is unheard of, it?s crazy. But this is not new for him. When I saw this kid, I think he can do anything.?

Bengie was quick to point out that Yadier is just as deserving of MVP consideration.

?Especially for what he did for that team after losing (Albert) Pujols, and with a new manager,? he said. ?But if Buster wins it, that is a good choice, too.?

What impresses him most about the way his brother receives the Cardinals staff?

?It?s the way he cares,? Bengie said. ?It?s what we used to discuss all the time. I tell him, `Everyone wants to be their best out there, but you have to be the best for yourself and you have to make every pitcher on the staff be their best, too.? That?s what impresses me. He makes everybody great.?

Bengie said Yadier expressed frustration to him in recent days about his lack of hitting in the postseason. He had a breakout year at the plate (.315, 22 home runs), but owns just a .138 average in the No.5 spot with just two RBIs in seven postseason games.

?Hey, I told him, `Win a game with your catching,?? Bengie said. ?If you hit three bloopers and go 3 for 4, does that make you a great hitter? No. So don?t worry about what the numbers look like. Just be positive.?

That?s precisely the kind of message Bengie would deliver to Tim Lincecum on the mound during both the right-hander?s Cy Young seasons in 2008-09. It?s the kind of rah-rah cheerleading that comes less natural to Posey, which is among the reasons that a struggling Lincecum has been paired so often with backup catcher Hector Sanchez in this wild aberration of a season.

What advice would Bengie give to Buster about catching Timmy?

?Well, one of the things you have to know about Timmy is you have to keep him very positive and very up,? he said. ?It?s about keeping him on the right track instead of letting things going through his head.

?You have to talk to him almost every inning and keep him up to the challenge and keep him happy. It?s a psychologist sort of thing, but as a catcher, you do that with every pitcher in different way. You have to psyche him up to go out and pitch.

?You?ve got to suck up your pride and go to him an say, `Let?s go.??

Giants manager Bruce Bochy continues to insist that it?s his preference, and nobody else?s, that Lincecum and Barry Zito work primarily with Sanchez. The manager only started Sanchez once this postseason, when Zito started Game 4 of the NLDS at Cincinnati and Lincecum came out of the bullpen to throw 4 1/3 solid innings. Lincecum threw to Posey in his two other relief appearances this postseason, tossing a total of four scoreless innings.

Bochy hasn?t named Lincecum the Game 4 starter yet, nor is he committing to a batterymate whenever Lincecum or Zito take the mound again.

Bengie was blunt, though: It?s high time that Posey and Lincecum, the Giants? two highest profile players, work together again.

?If you ask me, they need to stop this,? Bengie said. ?I understand they are keeping Posey healthy by having him play first base and not catch all the time. But there will come a day when Brandon Belt says, `This is not fair. I want to be out there.? And then you?ll have trouble.

?They need to take control and say, `Buster has got to catch Timmy and that?s it. I want to keep everybody happy, but this is our team.??

For now, only one of these two teams ? and one of these two All-Star catchers -- can advance to the World Series. Even in retirement, Bengie watches his brother and his former understudy and feels the stirrings of being an active player once again.

?Those guys, they wanted to learn so much,? he said. ?Now they are so good, there is nothing left to teach them.?

UK police: We regret using stun gun on blind man

LONDON (AP) ? British police apologized Wednesday for using a stun gun to subdue a blind stroke victim they wrongly thought was carrying a samurai sword, a bizarre case of mistaken identity that left the man fearing for his life.

Colin Farmer told British broadcasters that he thought he was going to die after he heard a commotion, felt electricity surge through his body, and was knocked to the floor by an unknown assailant. The incident occurred in the town of Chorley, in northern England's Lancashire County, on Friday.

"This seemed to be going on forever ... I was convinced I was being murdered in plain sight," the 61-year-old told Sky News television. "He (the officer) jumped on the small of my back with his knees ... wrenched my arms up my back and cuffed me so tightly I was in great pain." Farmer told the BBC he was shouting: "I'm blind! I'm blind!"

Lancashire Police Chief Stuart Williams said police brought the victim to a local hospital to be checked out after they realized they had used the weapon against the wrong man.

He said in a statement that police "deeply regret" the incident, which happened after police received multiple reports that a man was walking through Chorley "armed with a samurai sword."

Williams said that an urgent investigation had been launched into the incident and that the matter would also be reviewed by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, Britain's police watchdog agency.

Police said a different man was arrested in connection with the sword reports, but was released without charge.

Britain's tough weapons laws severely restrict the possession of blades, knives and knuckle dusters.

In an agreement that is sure to help boost the flagging local economy, Sutter Health signed a 10-year lease on a 295,000-square-foot office building in Roseville, California, that will house more than 1,000 administrative employees ? many of them new hires who will be phased into their positions over the next 18 months.

Cushman & Wakefield, the world?s largest privately-held commercial real estate services firm, represented Sutter Health in the transaction with the landlord, Quality Investment Properties. The site is part of an office complex formerly occupied by Hewlett Packard Co.

?We are delighted to have assisted Sutter Health in the delivery of an innovative real estate solution for their unique needs,? said Ron Thomas, one of the team leaders from Cushman & Wakefield.

Sutter Health?s new administrative hub, which is expected to open in early 2013 at 9100 Foothills Boulevard in Roseville, near Highway 65 and Blue Oaks Boulevard, will better serve patients by moving a number of business support services, such as billing, finance and human resources, into one central location. Currently, these services are managed in dozens of separate Northern California locations ? from the Central Valley to the Bay Area.

?Their selection of the Roseville location to locate a major administrative service center speaks volumes about the area?s skilled workforce and business-centric approach to economic development,? said Thomas.

Barbara Hayes, president and CEO of the Sacramento Area Commerce and Trade Organization (SACTO), called it ?a tremendous win for the region,? according to the Sacramento Bee.

Work will begin immediately on tenant upgrades, and the first phase of about 300 employees will move into the new administrative center in the first quarter of next year.
