Dumbest People Of 2012?

Dumb As A Blog:

Dumb people come and go every year, and 2012 was no different.

The past 12 months saw some epic stupidity, and not just from famous generals who had affairs with their biographers, men still dating the women who bit off their testicles, or the CEO who oversaw the death of the Twinkie.

The folks at Dumb As A Blog were smart enough to find those people and 17 more.

Today's Woman Review & Giveaway Blog ? KInderglo nightlights

?

There are monsters in the closet,? and a boogeyman hiding under the bed. ?Many children have a fear of the dark, but there are some things we can do to help kids overcome that fear. Make your child feel comfortable. Show them that there?s nothing in the closet, under the bed? and it is their teddy bear in the corner. Positively assure? them that no harm will come to them and that you are close by.? Provide support for your child by placing a nightlight in their room.? Nightlights can be an effective way to help children feel more secure at night. For parents, it can be the only way to ensure that? you get a full night?s sleep.

There are many different kinds of night lights on the market. Our personal favorite happens to be KinderGlo nightlights.? Shaped? like characters these rechargeable nightlights are made of a non-toxic plastic that won?t ever get hot to the touch, meaning your child can carry? them with them to the bathroom or cuddle with them in bed.

Pressing the light button on the bottom of the KinderGlo nightlight figure will turn on the nightlight and select continually changing colors or a constant single color of blue, red or green. The night light automatically dim and shuts off after 30 minutes in all color settings,? or parents can press and hold the button for three seconds to keep the KinderGlo on all night.

We were sent Hootie to review. Hooties is about 5 inches tall and has all the same features common as the KinderGlo Night Lights.? Currently, there are 8 different adorable characters to choose from and? they are available for only $24.95 at the Kinderglo Store and Amazon.

Sleep? is particularly important for children, as it directly impacts mental and physical development. A Kinderglo makes sleep time easier and would make a great gift for any child who is afraid of the dark.

McAfee wants to return to US, 'normal life'

In this photo released by Guatemala's Human Rights Ombudsman's office, software company founder John McAfee is photographed in an immigration detention center in Guatemala City, Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012. The anti-virus guru was arrested at a hotel in an upscale neighborhood with the help of Interpol agents, hours after he said he would seek asylum in the Central American country. (AP) ? Software company founder John McAfee says he wants to return to the United States and "settle down to whatever normal life" he can.

McAfee says "I simply would like to live comfortably day by day, fish, swim, enjoy my declining years."

The off-beat McAfee answered what he claimed were reporters' questions during a live-stream Internet broadcast from the Guatemalan detention center where he is fighting a government order he be returned to Belize.

Police in neighboring Belize want to question McAfee in the fatal shooting of a U.S. expatriate who lived near his home on a Belizean island. McAfee has denied involvement in the killing.

McAfee said Sunday he blacked out and hit his head earlier in the week after not eating and smoking "almost non-stop."

FTP: Eli: I don't think it took rocket scientist either

Washington Redskins v New York GiantsGetty Images

Week Seven was a very lucky week for yours truly.? With an unlucky 13 games on the schedule, I got 12 of them correct, with only a late comeback from the Titans blocking an unprecedented piece of perfection.

More importantly, MDS and I disagreed on three games.? Thanks to the Cowboys, Saints, and Colts, my two-game season-to-date lead has been extended to five games.

For the year, I?m now 67-37, and MDS is 62-42.

MDS will join Thursday?s PFT Live to discuss this week?s picks.? There will be no gloating.

At least not by him.

Buccaneers at Vikings

MDS?s take: After I was burned by picking the Bucs last week on the way to going 0-for-3 on games where I disagreed with Florio, I?m playing it safe this week. Tampa Bay still looks to me like a team that?s headed in the right direction, but right now the Vikings have too much for the Bucs on both sides of the ball and should win this one comfortably.

MDS?s pick: Vikings 27, Buccaneers 13.

Florio?s take:? The Vikings get a chance to show how different they are this year against one of the teams to whom the Vikings blew a big halftime lead last year.? This time, if the Vikings are up by 10 or more at the break, look for them to close it out with a defense that finally is good enough to hold leads.

Florio?s pick:? Vikings 21, Buccaneers 19.

Panthers at Bears

MDS?s take: Cam Newton is going to bounce back from this slump he?s in eventually. He?s too talented not to. But the Bears are the wrong team for a young quarterback to bounce back against. Chicago?s relentless pressure will force a few turnovers and lead to another loss for the Panthers.

MDS?s pick: Bears 20, Panthers 10.

Florio?s take:? Rattled by the ouster of G.M. Marty Hurney, racked by injuries, and reeling from the sad-sack demeanor of Cam Newton, the Panthers are poised to get plastered.

Florio?s pick:? Bears 31, Panthers 10.

Chargers at Browns

MDS?s take: The Chargers have had two weeks to lick their wounds after that disastrous Monday night meltdown against the Broncos. They?ll come in to Cleveland focused and motivated and win this one comfortably.

MDS?s pick: Chargers 31, Browns 17.

Florio?s take:? If Mike Holmgren?s current team can knock off the Chargers, the Chargers could be Mike Holmgren?s next team.? Though a house-cleaning could still be coming, the Chargers will likely do enough to reverse a bad two weeks of blown leads and stickum, allegedly.

Florio?s pick:? Chargers 24, Browns 17.

Seahawks at Lions

MDS?s take: Mistakes keep killing the Lions, whether it?s penalties, turnovers or special teams coverage breakdowns. If the Lions could get out of their own way they could go on a run down the stretch and still contend for a wild card berth, but that doesn?t look likely at this point. Seattle is the team that looks like a playoff contender, and the Seahawks will take another step in that direction with a win on the road.

MDS?s pick: Seahawks 17, Lions 14.

Florio?s take:? If this one were set for Seattle, it would be a no brainer.? In Detroit, the Seahawks have an opportunity to prove that they?re capable of beating better-than-bad teams in a place other than CenturyLink Field.

Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 17, Lions 16.

Jaguars at Packers

MDS?s take: In the biggest mismatch of the week, the Jaguars? offense will look even worse than usual without Maurice Jones-Drew, and Aaron Rodgers will have his third consecutive huge game.

MDS?s pick: Packers 34, Jaguars 3.

Florio?s take:? The Packers have never beaten the Jaguars at Lambeau Field.? Then again, these teams have played there only once.? The Jags will want to forget their second trip to town.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 45, Jaguars 21.

Dolphins at Jets

MDS?s take: I?m impressed that the Jets aren?t going down without a fight. When they lost Darrelle Revis and got blown out by the 49ers, I figured the Jets were finished, but they?ve played good football for the last three weeks, even if they have only one win to show for it in those three games. The Jets will beat the Dolphins in a low-scoring game and get back to .500.

MDS?s pick: Jets 13, Dolphins 10.

Florio?s take:? Despite the injuries and the ineffectiveness and the uncertainty, the Jets have improved over the past few weeks.? They?re good enough to complete the sweep of a Dolphins team that has improved even more discreetly.

Florio?s pick:? Jets 30, Dolphins 20.

Falcons at Eagles

MDS?s take: The Eagles know their backs are against the wall, and the Falcons have been scraping by with three straight close wins. This looks to me like the day when the Falcons? luck runs out, and the last unbeaten team in the league gets beaten.

MDS?s pick: Eagles 24, Falcons 21.

Florio?s take:? Andy Reid is 13-0 after the bye week.? Sometimes, there?s no need for elaboration.

Florio?s pick:? Eagles 24, Falcons 23.

Redskins at Steelers

MDS?s take: The Steelers took a big step toward the playoffs with last week?s win in Cincinnati, and I like them to keep it going against the Redskins. Look for Steelers tight end Heath Miller to have a big game against the Redskins? defense, just as Giants tight end Martellus Bennett, Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph and Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez have in the Redskins? last three games.

MDS?s pick: Steelers 28, Redskins 27.

Florio?s take:? The Steelers are 20-2-1 at Heinz Field against NFC teams.? But Heinz Field has never seen anything like RG3, who?ll run circles around a Polamalu-free Pittsburgh defense.

Florio?s pick:? Redskins 23, Steelers 20.

Patriots at Rams

MDS?s take: The Rams? secondary has been playing well and the Patriots? secondary has been leaving receivers wide open, and I?m tempted to pick the upset for that reason. But with Danny Amendola hurt I don?t think the Rams have the ammunition to take advantage of the Patriots? problems on defense, and I think New England?s running game can churn up yardage at Wembley Stadium and lead the Patriots to a low-scoring win.

MDS?s pick: Patriots 16, Rams 10.

Florio?s take:? The team whose name pays homage to the men who kicked the butts of the Brits like to kick butt in Britain.? Though it won?t be a blowout like it was three years ago against the Bucs, the Pats should be able to build a fourth-quarter lead.? And hold it.? For a change.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 27, Rams 21.

Colts at Titans

MDS?s take: Titans running back Chris Johnson took advantage of a bad Bills defense last week, and he should be able to take advantage of a bad Colts defense this week. Johnson will go for about 150 yards and the Colts? offense won?t be able to keep up.

MDS?s pick: Titans 28, Colts 21.

Florio?s take:? The winner of this one won?t likely challenge the Texans for the division crown but would be very much alive for a wild-card berth.? The Titans continue their knack for playing in ? and winning ? exciting games.

Florio?s pick:? Titans 27, Colts 24.

Raiders at Chiefs

MDS?s take: I?m not a believer in Brady Quinn as the Chiefs? long-term answer at quarterback, but as a short-term fix who won?t turn the ball over as often as Matt Cassel, Quinn should be able to lead Kansas City to a home win over a bad team.

MDS?s pick: Chiefs 20, Raiders 16.

Florio?s take:? Oakland has won five straight times at Arrowhead Stadium.? With an extra week to prepare and everyone on the hot seat, if the Chiefs don?t beat the Raiders at home now, they possibly never will.

Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 24, Raiders 10.

Giants at Cowboys

MDS?s take: Completing a season sweep of the Giants would go a long way toward getting the Cowboys into playoff contention, but I don?t see it happening. The Cowboys? defense will miss linebacker Sean Lee, Giants quarterback Eli Manning will have a big day, and the Giants will improve to 4-0 all time at Cowboys Stadium.

MDS?s pick: Giants 31, Cowboys 20.

Florio?s take:? The Cowboys aren?t nearly as good as they were in Week One, when they beat the Giants in New Jersey.? The Giants are the same, but this time they won?t get complacent.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 35, Cowboys 27.

Saints at Broncos

MDS?s take: Two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks will be on the field in Denver, but Drew Brees has to play against a good Broncos secondary, while Peyton Manning gets to play against a terrible Saints secondary. Advantage Peyton.

MDS?s pick: Broncos 42, Saints 21.

Florio?s take:? When he was the head coach of the Panthers, John Fox held his own against Sean Payton?s Saints.? This time, Fox has a great quarterback ? and the Saints don?t have Payton.

Florio?s pick:? Broncos 38, Saints 28.

49ers at Cardinals

MDS?s take: The Cardinals? great start to the season may come to a screeching halt on Monday night.? A home loss to a division rival would be tough for Arizona to overcome, and a win at Arizona will be another step for the 49ers toward establishing themselves as the clear favorites to win the NFC West.

MDS?s pick: 49ers 20, Cardinals 13.

Florio?s take:? Once atop the NFC West, the Cardinals are close to completing their slide to the basement.? Blame it on the lack of a high-end quarterback and an offensive line to protect him.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 24, Cardinals 13.

Study confirms that intracoronary and intravenous use of abciximab during angioplasty yield similar results

MIAMI, FL OCTOBER 25, 2012 A study confirmed no differences in various measures of heart damage, according to cardiac magnetic resonance (MRI) imaging, in patients receiving the anti-clotting medication abxicimab directly into the heart (intracoronary) compared to those receiving it intravenously (IV). The results of the AIDA STEMI MRI sub-study were presented today the 24th annual Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) scientific symposium. Sponsored by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, TCT is the world's premier educational meeting specializing in interventional cardiovascular medicine.

The AIDA STEMI trial was a randomized, open-label, multicenter trial in 2,065 patients presenting with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) comparing intracoronary (IC) versus intravenous (IV) abciximab during PCI with subsequent 12 hour intravenous infusion. Last year, researchers reported that the trial found that both methods yielded similar 90-day rates of all-cause mortality, recurrent heart attack or congestive heart failure.

Researchers enrolled 703 patients within the overall trial in a cardiac magnetic resonance imaging sub-study, one of the largest MRI sub-studies conducted in patients with STEMI. Cardiac MRI allows for a more sensitive investigation of the mechanistic and pathophysiological effects of STEMI therapies on myocardial damage and reperfusion injury.

Cardiac MRI was completed within four days after heart attack using a standardized protocol including edema imaging and late gadolinium enhancement. Researchers examined infarct size, myocardial salvage, microvascular obstruction and ventricular function to determine the potential benefits of intracoronary compared to intravenous application of abciximab.

The amount of myocardium at risk and final infarct size did not differ significantly between the IC versus the IV abciximab groups. Consequently, the myocardial salvage index was similar between the two groups. In further detailed analysis there were no differences in microvascular obstruction between both treatment groups.

"Results of this sub-study demonstrate that intracoronary as compared to intravenous abciximab did not result in a difference in myocardial damage or reperfusion injury," said lead investigator Holger Thiele, MD. Dr. Thiele is Co-Director of the University of Leipzig - Heart Center in Germany.

"These findings confirm similarities in the combined endpoint of death, reinfarction and congestive heart failure found between the two methods in the AIDA STEMI trial," Dr. Thiele said.

Dr. Thiele will present the AIDA STEMI MRI sub-study on Thursday October 25 at 12:30 PM EST in the Main Arena (Hall D) at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

The trial was funded by Lilly Germany, the University of Leipzig - Heart Center and Clinical Trial Centre, and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Copper rebounds from six-week low on China optimism

China's economy is slowly picking up from its weakest period of growth in three years, a survey of purchasing managers signaled, with new orders and output at their highest in months.

Analysts said the figures from the world's second largest economy had pushed three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange 0.9 percent higher to $7,903 per tonne by 0708 GMT.

The contract touched $7,807.75 the day before, its lowest level since September 7 and below key support at its 200-day exponential moving average.

"London copper is buoyed by today's PMI numbers, but Shanghai copper was mainly held back from further gains by a still-sluggish Chinese copper physical market," said Orient Futures analyst Andy Du.

The most active January copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange edged up 0.4 percent to close at 57,500 yuan ($9,200) per tonne.

In a sign of weak downstream demand for Chinese copper, spot copper prices were trading at a discount of up to 200 yuan to the ShFE front month contract, a bigger spread than the previous session when that discount was only up to 100 yuan.

"Spot prices have been lower than front-month futures in China for some time now, a sign of weak downstream demand here and uncertainty over copper's outlook," said Du.

"For copper futures to stage a convincing rebound, we need to see Chinese consumption lifting."

For now, data suggests that the day's higher ShFE copper prices were largely due to short-covering as ShFE November copper's net daily open interest had fallen by 7,182 lots.

And despite signs pointing to China's economy stabilising, analysts warned the global economy was not out of the woods yet.

"Although there were some positive signals in the most recent data for China, the pace of growth has clearly slowed and uncertainties stemming from global demand and the fallout from previous policy tightening continue to cloud the outlook (for base metals)," National Australia Bank said in a client note.

Investors will be keeping an eye on the Fed's two-day meeting, which ends later in the session, although the U.S. central bank is likely to hold off from taking fresh steps, and will instead review the impact of the significant action it took last month.

Over the next few months, market players will also look out for new policies by Beijing that may affect metals demand, with a leadership change at the Communist Party Congress on November 8.

In industry news, China's copper imports jumped 6.93 percent on the year, largely due to the arrivals of term shipments booked last year rather than a spike in demand.

The Most Spectacular Mutation in Recent Human History

Globally, lactose intolerance is the norm; around two-thirds of humans cannot drink milk in adulthood Globally, lactose intolerance is the norm; around two-thirds of humans cannot drink milk in adulthood

To repurpose a handy metaphor, let's call two of the first Homo sapiens Adam and Eve. By the time they welcomed their firstborn, that rascal Cain, into the world, 2 million centuries of evolution had established how his infancy would play out. For the first few years of his life, he would take his nourishment from Eve's breast. Once he reached about 4 or 5 years old, his body would begin to slow its production of lactase, the enzyme that allows mammals to digest the lactose in milk. Thereafter, nursing or drinking another animal's milk would have given the little hell-raiser stomach cramps and potentially life-threatening diarrhea; in the absence of lactase, lactose simply rots in the guts. With Cain weaned, Abel could claim more of his mother's attention and all of her milk. This kept a lid on sibling rivalry?though it didn't quell the animus between these particular sibs?while allowing women to bear more young. The pattern was the same for all mammals: At the end of infancy, we became lactose-intolerant for life.

Two hundred thousand years later, around 10,000 B.C., this began to change. A genetic mutation appeared, somewhere near modern-day Turkey, that jammed the lactase-production gene permanently in the ?on? position. The original mutant was probably a male who passed the gene on to his children. People carrying the mutation could drink milk their entire lives. Genomic analyses have shown that within a few thousand years, at a rate that evolutionary biologists had thought impossibly rapid, this mutation spread throughout Eurasia, to Great Britain, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, India and all points in between, stopping only at the Himalayas. Independently, other mutations for lactose tolerance arose in Africa and the Middle East, though not in the Americas, Australia, or the Far East.

In an evolutionary eye-blink, 80 percent of Europeans became milk-drinkers; in some populations, the proportion is close to 100 percent. (Though globally, lactose intolerance is the norm; around two-thirds of humans cannot drink milk in adulthood.) The speed of this transformation is one of the weirder mysteries in the story of human evolution, more so because it's not clear why anybody needed the mutation to begin with. Through their cleverness, our lactose-intolerant forebears had already found a way to consume dairy without getting sick, irrespective of genetics.

Mark Thomas, an evolutionary geneticist at University College London, points out that in modern-day Turkey, where the mutation seems to have arisen, the warm climate causes fresh milk to rapidly change its composition. ?If you milk a cow in the morning,? he says, ?by lunchtime it's yogurt.?

Yogurt has plenty of benefits to confer, among them large testicles, swagger, and glossy fur?at least if you're a mouse?but most salient to our ancestors was that the fermentation process that transforms milk into yogurt consumes lactose, which is a sugar. This is why many lactose-intolerant people can eat yogurt without difficulty. As milk ascends what Thomas calls the ?fermentation ladder,? which begins with yogurt and culminates with virtually lactose-free hard cheeses, ever more lactose is fermented out. ?If you're at a party and someone says, 'Oh, I can't eat that?I'm lactose intolerant,' ? he says, ?you can tell them to shut up and eat the Parmigiano.?

Analysis of potsherds from Eurasia and parts of Africa have shown that humans were fermenting the lactose out of dairy for thousands of years before lactose tolerance was widespread. Here is the heart of the mystery: If we could consume dairy by simply letting it sit around for a few hours or days, it doesn't appear to make much sense for evolution to have propagated the lactose-tolerance mutation at all, much less as vigorously as it did. Culture had already found a way around our biology. Various ideas are being kicked around to explain why natural selection promoted milk-drinking, but evolutionary biologists are still puzzled.

?I've probably worked more on the evolution of lactose tolerance than anyone in the world,? says Thomas. ?I can give you a bunch of informed and sensible suggestions about why it's such an advantage, but we just don't know. It's a ridiculously high selection differential, just insane, for the last several thousand years.?

A ?high selection differential? is something of a Darwinian euphemism. It means that those who couldn't drink milk were apt to die before they could reproduce. At best they were having fewer, sicklier children. That kind of life-or-death selection differential seems necessary to explain the speed with which the mutation swept across Eurasia and spread even faster in Africa. The unfit must have been taking their lactose-intolerant genomes to the grave.

Milk, by itself, somehow saved lives. This is odd, because milk is just food, just one source of nutrients and calories among many others. It's not medicine. But there was a time in human history when our diet and environment conspired to create conditions that mimicked those of a disease epidemic. Milk, in such circumstances, may well have performed the function of a life-saving drug.

There are no written records from the period when humans invented agriculture, but if there were, they would tell a tale of woe. Agriculture, in Jared Diamond's phrase, was the ?worst mistake in human history.? The previous system of nourishment?hunting and gathering?had all but guaranteed a healthy diet, as it was defined by variety. But it made us a rootless species of nomads. Agriculture offered stability. It also transformed nature into a machine for cranking out human beings, though there was a cost. Once humans began to rely on the few crops that we knew how to grow reliably, our collective health collapsed. The remains of the first Neolithic farmers show clear signs of dramatic tooth decay, anemia, and low bone-density. Average height dropped by about 5 inches, while infant mortality rose. Diseases of deficiency like scurvy, rickets, beriberi, and pellagra were serious problems that would have been totally perplexing. We are still reeling from the change: Heart disease, diabetes, alcoholism, celiac disease, and perhaps even acne are direct results of the switch to agriculture.

Coke Ad Forces Ordinary Folks Into A 007 Foot Chase - Business ...

Coca-Cola

Coke Zero's "Skyfall" video

The new Coke Zero "Skyfall" video is yet another textbook case of how to create a successful viral ad.

It's a simple idea, followed by an incredibly complicated execution: How do ordinary people react if they're suddenly forced into a James Bond-style foot chase through a crowded European railway station?

The spot was created by viral masters Duval Guillaume Modem, best-known for their Belgian TNT effort earlier this year, which featured unsuspecting villagers who find themselves in the middle of gunfights, runaway ambulances, and lingerie-wearing women on motorcycles.

Following a similar formula for Coke, Duval Guillaume Modem set up digital vending machines in an Antwerp train station to offer travelers free tickets to the launch of "Skyfall."

There's just one catch: the free tickets are on platform 6, and the punters are given only 70 seconds to get there.

As they race across the station, the befuddled commuters find themselves confronted with just the sort of nonsense that crops up in the movies ? two guys carrying a plate glass window at just the wrong moment, a fruit vendor spilling an avalanche of oranges, and so on.

It turns out that the guys who take up the challenge handle the assignment with a fair amount of grace:

Business Negotiations: Cooperate to Claim Value

Business Negotiations: Cooperate to Claim Value

What happens in negotiations between two individuals who care little about each other?s outcomes?

Suppose an engineer and an industrial designer are arguing over the design of a car bumper. The designer only cares about whether the bumper matches the style of the vehicle; the engineer is concerned only about how the bumper connects to the front. After describing the trouble he?s having with the existing design, the engineer presents a solution that the designer deems ?ugly.? The designer threatens to involve her boss if the engineer doesn?t revert back to the prior design.

You?re the engineer ? what do you do?

First, balance your value-claiming strategies by working to create value. Ask the designer to explain where she thinks the new design went wrong, and identify possible solutions and low-priority issues on which you can offer tradeoffs. Second, remind her that there?s hope for a solution if you both let down your guard and work together. Third, listen openly to ?the designer?s proposals and try to build on them. Above all, ensure that your cooperative moves are reciprocated, or you?ll be vulnerable to exploitation.
